Oldham Athletic v Gillingham-Match Thread

Postby Kent_UckyFriedGills » Wed Sep 10, 2014 3:15 pm

Gillingham Travel to Oldham Athletic on Saturday, and should hopefully be fresh after no midweek game this week.Oldham is a bit of a bogey ground for us with no win at Boundary Park since the 1998/1999 season where we won 1-4.I would take a point from the game.

What Team would you play? Kedwell is out I should think.

I think Gillingham will line up as follows.......................

------------------------------Bywater-------------------------------------
-------------Legge------------Egan----------------Hause---------------
McGlashan--------------------------------------------------------Martin
----------A.Morris--------Hessenthaler------------Dack----------------
-----------------McDonald--------------Norris---------------------------

Subs: G.Morris (GK), Fish, Davies, Linganzi, Pritchard, Dickenson, Kedwell / German

I think Peter Taylor will change from my personal preference of 4.2.3.1 to a 3.5.2 / 5.3.2 formation because with Gavin Hoyte suspended Peter Taylor has not got the cover he wants at right back and I don't think Peter Taylor rates Matt Fish either because in our last two matches we have made changes at right back and on both occasions Matt Fish has not come on, so either Matt Fish isn't 100% fully fit or Peter Taylor has seen enough to suggest that Matt Fish is not going to cut it for Gillingham in League One ???

Another reason why I think we will play 5.3.2 / 3.5.2 is because this formation allows us to get two strikers on to the pitch and Luke Norris made a big difference when he came on against Coventry City last week that I can see Luke Norris starting alongside Cody McDonald tomorrow, I know this formation is a anti-winger line up, but McGlashan has to start, even if it means playing in a right wing back role.

There is a chance that Danny Kedwell could be named as sub tomorrow but should Danny Kedwell not be fit enough to be named in the eighteen man squad then Antonio German will be named among the subs bench instead, of course I could be wrong and Peter Taylor could stick with 4.2.3.1 or even name a 4.4.2 formation, it's been one of our advantages this season that Gillingham are not predictable, it isn't 4.1.3.2 all the time and we have changed formations during matches already this season and we could well do that again tomorrow.

Oldham Athletic Away is the first away game in the league that has a lot of importance, Barnsley, Coventry City and MK Dons are all likely to be pushing for promotion or the playoff places, but Oldham Athletic are like Gillingham in that we're both trying to consolidate our positions in League One after narrowly avoiding relegation last season (even though Oldham Athletic have been in League One for eighteen years), but getting points against teams like Oldham is what will dictate where Gillingham are going to end in the table this season.

When we got relegated in 2009 / 2010, Southampton, Leeds United, Norwich, Charlton Athletic, Brighton & Hove Albion, MK Dons and Huddersfield Town all left Priestfield Stadium without getting a win, but had we lost to Leeds United but won against Tranmere Rovers instead, Gillingham would of stayed up that's why it is so important that we get a result against Oldham Athletic tomorrow because these are the sort of teams Gillingham need to pick up most of there points from.

It's going to be a long day tomorrow, hopefully we come back from Oldham with all three points - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is anyone`s guess what Team we will play today, but I think we will go with Cody, and Norris upfront. If Kedwell is ok to play, then he is likely to come off the bench.Hopefully we can get something from the game.

I listened on Gillsplayer, and it didn`t sound a good performance. With it being a bogey ground, and not a good performance we have to be pleased with a point. If we can nick points and the odd win away from home we should be ok again this season. We have two home games now,so hopefully we can get a win or two.Peterborough will be a really tough game.

Nice to get a point, I know it is early but I think Bristol City, Peterborough and MKD are already starting to pull away from the rest, but like you said pick up a point away, win our home games , bring a couple of goal scorers in when the transfer window opens (of course half the teams in the division will be trying to do that, so maybe push one of the guys we already have into becoming a goal scoring machine) and maybe a top ten ,even dare I say a top seven place is not out of the question (please footie Gods, please), would be nice not to have to keep looking over our shoulders all season to see how far the drop is to the bottom four.
