Here we go again

Firstly great news about Max Ehmer. Really pleased. Good player and we look like we have a good squad forming.

Now back to our normality.

Scally saying we can reach the premier league again, because Bournemouth have done it. Firstly Bournemouth did have money. Secondly....really, can you not just make yourself happy talking about maybe achieving the championship.

Must be the summer. Oh look here is the Sun, oh and the new stadium, oh and premier league football and oh have you all got your season tickets yet.

Sorry for the burst of cynicism, just bores me seeing the Kent online re-issuing the same old tripe.

I've been firmly in the camp for a while now of just accepting he is one of those people who you take ton of salt. Nothing personal, I know a couple of people in my social circles that are the same and whilst it can be incredibly annoying and can make the club look daft, you just let their comments wash off your back whilst many others take offence all the time! That said he is also right, we do have the potential but then we are one of 72 league clubs all believing the same thing not to mention many more in the non-league set-up!

Do we believe it? No. It is possible? Yes. There has been A LOT of interest being whipped up particularly by the fantastic job done by those running the clubs Twitter account and I understand he wants to capitalise on it but he has to be cautious. People expected a strong start last season then a new stadium and now, to guarantee the first part of the assault on the EPL, we need to finish top 2 and if we don't suddenly it all comes crashing down! In reality all it does is set the players up for a fall. They have potential. I would rather set a target of being higher than last year at Christmas, then a play-off finish and they have the potential to over-achieve. Make them out to be the best and heap on the pressure and we could find ourselves at the wrong end of the table. Set realistic targets and exceed them!

For season after season I have said that GFC supporters are happy if we finish above where the team finished last season,12th this year, 10th the next year, relegated the year after, new manager the year after who will discuss re building, couple of years in the 4th division then promoted back to the 3rd division, stop me if you have heard this one before, no wonder the players are happy to wallow in mediocrity , the fans are so why should they put in 110% when the fans are happy with them putting in 65% effort each season.

I am not happy, with mediocrity but then contentment is not a bad thing.

Our fan base, our ground size everything points to a div 1 team which might flirt with the championship. Until some of that changes, then nothing else will.

No point me looking enviously at the premiership, causing mass dissatisfaction with what I am watching at the gill's as all that will lead to is not going any more.

If we got into the championship next year, we would be competing with 3 teams who will have a 80 million premiership parachute payment and potentially 3 more who went down the previous year with a 40 million pound parachute payment. Yes I understand their whole set up costs a lot more but even so, how can we possibly compete with that unless we improve the ground and fill it up.

I think all divisions should be scrapped and we should have a 150 team Premier League then everyone gets what they want :-D. If that's not possible then fans have to be realistic and aim at what is possible within their remit. Teams / players ALWAYS over-achieve but only when set realistic targets otherwise it always seems a fruitless task before it begins. I am no psychologist but I wouldn't mind betting that to over-achieve they have to have the potential to be able to hit the first target, then the second and so on. Simply saying "went want second" is futile. We did that last season and ended up in the relegation zone and then re-addressed the target as survival and almost got play-offs!

That to me is the opposite of mediocrity. No one puts their business at risk of going under by taking a punt and success (usually) takes years of building. As I don't believe we are no smaller than the 20th "biggest" club in the land I cannot expect us to get there but it doesn't mean to say with the right building work done by Jed and his team we can't get there. Effectively saying we will to our fans who think we may Barcelona look like Chatham Town is like a red rag to a bull and leads to disappointment and failure in the end.
