Johnstone`s Paint Trophy 2014-2015

Postby Kent_UckyFriedGills » Wed Jul 30, 2014 10:36 pm

Vanishing spray as was saw at the World Cup will be used in the JPT this season.Im glad to see it is being used as it puts a stop to players trying to move a few yards forward. Also we have missed out on a bye for the first round of the Competition. The byes in the Southern section were awarded to Bristol City,Exeter City,Northampton Town,Plymouth Argyle,Colchester United,Dagenham & Redbridge,Luton Town, and Milton Keynes Dons.

Teams we can get in the First Round are....AFC Wimbledon,Cambridge Utd,Crawley Town,Leyton Orient,Peterborough Utd,Southend Utd,and Stevenage.Who reckons we will end up with the hardest draw away at Peterborough?

Cambridge United Away would be nice as that means I can tick off a ground I have never been too before.

As long as we don't play AFC Wimbledon or Southend United away, those two grounds are the worst away ends I have been in along with the low terrace at Exeter City.

The draw for the First Round of the JPT is on Soccer am tomorrow morning on Sky 1.The draw should be made around 10:15-10-30.Cambridge at home would be nice,as we have not played them for years.

Gills will play Stevenage away in the First Round of the JPT,which means Chris Whelpdale, and Charlie Lee will play against the Gills so soon after leaving. It is certainly a winnable game for us.

At least it wasn't AFC Wimbledon or Southend United away because these grounds are among the worst in The Football League I have been too.

Stevenage is defiantly a winnable tie for us, although it will depend on what kind of team both sides will name at Broadhall Way.

They were picked for the drop by the "experts " last year and survived, and this year they can not hit their butts with a paddle, so I think things are looking good for us and a win in Colchester in the mighty paint pot trophy. Can anyone actually tell me why they have this trophy, no one appears to watch it.

Its had all manner of guises over the years as various tournaments. I guess the likelyhood of a League 1 or 2 side even making it to Wembley let alone winning a cup there is pretty small so this is the lower league chance to do so. Under this you then the FA Vase which is open to teams below League 2 so each get their small chance for glory and it can help to give a push for the end of the season and start of the next. The early rounds are generally very sparse but then team may also be involved with the league cup. As soon as you get to the area semi-finals and final the crowds pick up.

I always wondered if it was better to radically alter this or the League cup. I think it would be good to split everyone into regional groups and play two games in place of pre-season friendlies. Each match would be a local derby and could help boost ticket sales. We might be in a group with Crawley, Charlton and Brighton for example. Include Welsh and Scottish teams in the groups with the group winners going through to a regional knockout first round (followed by a random unseeded draw) and it could be interesting and it would spice up a League Cup not many top teams seem bothered with. I liked the idea so much I set up the tournament on FIFA.....at least I would have properly had there been enough groups and enough places available!

Now there is the future of football, first of all a Cup with English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh teams involved, lets go Llanfairpwyllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, go go go, what do you mean by the time we finished the name we were already down 2-0 ?
Then after that a European League with 20 International teams , winners of their Premier Division , or what ever they want to call it, then maybe in 25 years a World Team Tournament, played over 40 games with teams from around the World involved.
Of course for the faithful there will still be good old Gillingham playing in the First or Second Division, and this weeks game for September 12th 2035, Gillingham FC at home to Port Vale, in this the 47,000 meeting of these two Giants of the lower divisions.

I went to Stevenage V Gillingham Last Tuesday Night and the attendance was 1,613 and you only had to pay a fiver to get in if your brought your ticket in advance, so even with the incentive of watching the game for a fiver the attendance was still under 2,000, yet despite the low attendance all four sides of the ground were open for supporters.

The opportunity to win some silverware and play at Wembley should be the incentive for clubs to take this competition seriously, but the sheer number of fixtures clubs have had since the start of the season means that The First Round of The Football League Trophy gets used as a opportunity for teams to play there squad players and rest there key players for the important league matches - Look at Gillingham's Squad against Stevenage, Stuart Nelson, Stephen Bywater, John Egan, Kortney Hause, Doug Loft, Aaron Morris, Jermaine McGlashan and Danny Kedwell were not in the squad because they were either rested or injured, and we still sent out a strong team that were able to get the 1 - 0 and progress into The Second Round of the competition.

Colchester United Away gives Gillingham the chance to do something we didn't do last season, go on a cup run, we're not going to challenge for promotion or the playoffs this season and a cup run would be a great way of keeping our season a live, at least we didn't get MK Dons or Leyton Orient and I am pleased we didn't get AFC Wimbledon away as well, I would of liked a home tie but away to Colchester United is a winnable match and hopefully Danny Kedwell will be back for that match as well.

Think Bristol City are still in as well KFG , as you've only listed six potential opponents .
