Callum Davies new deal

I think this is great news. I really like Callum, always gives his all and is such a clean tackler, possibly the best we have had for some time. Most people even felt the penalty he conceded Tuesday was a clean tackle as well.

The strange thing is that he isn't given much credit by most fans. Some were blaming him for our 1-0 defeat to Coventry and others before felt he didn't deserve his place. Under Martin Allen he wasn't fancied at all and fell out of favour with Peter Taylor at the start. Gradually as the defence has been tried and tested he has shown he is worthy of a place and now "deserves his new deal"! Personally I don't see what he has done differently but I am pleased for him given that he gives everything despite only being offered bit parts in the team. What does everybody else feel about him?

Always thought he was one of our best youngsters and I was puzzled why he wasn't given more of a go before. Good luck to him for the rest of his time with us.

I think Peter Taylor is taking Gillingham in a different direction as Gillingham's Average Age in our starting eleven is so much younger this season then it was last season (Adam Barrett not playing see's this average age drop quite a bit), but Callum Davies being 21 isn't the only reason why he has being given a contract extension because I believe that Callum Davies's versatility and being able to play as a defensive holding midfielder, a centre back or even a right back gives him a edge, especially when Peter Taylor is changing systems from 5.3.2 / 3.5.2 - 4,2,3,1, 4.3.3 or 4.4.2.

I don't think Peter Taylor is satisified with the defensive options he had available to him as Matt Fish, Leon Legge, Adam Barrett and Joe Martin are all under contract for this coming season, I am not suggesting that all five will go but Adam Barrett has gone out on loan and Leon Legge is likely to leave on loan as well, I don't rate Joe Martin at left back and Matt Fish is still recovering from his injury set back in pre-season, but if the proven and experienced players in League One are beyond what we can afford (like Peter Taylor said at the start of the season) then developing youngsters is the way to go, Callum Davies has kicked on now he is getting more game-time, being handed The Captain's Armband on Tuesday Night must give Callum Davies a confidence boost as well.

It did look like Davies would be loaned out and leave at the end of the season, but credit to him he has worked hard and earned a new deal.I think Davies is a good young player, and he can still get better.
