Time get realistic and look at the facts

Postby Garawa » Sun Feb 15, 2015 2:20 pm

OK, people seem to be getting really carried away with this impressive run and it's time we came back down to Earth a bit! All the talk now, just a few weeks after most was talking about going down and survival, is about the playoffs as we are just 2 points off the play off zone. So lets look at the facts.....

We have won 4 consecutive home games for the first time in 2 years.
We have now won 5 games in 7 and are unbeaten during that time.
We have scored in 20 consecutive games in the league and cup for the first time since the 1959 / 60 season.
We are top of the last 6 form table in League 1.
No one has scored more goals than the Gills in League 1 over their last 10 matches in the league.
Cody has 8 goals from 13 games, Dack 6 from 11, Marquis 5 from 6 and McGlashan 3 from 7.

Hopefully that has added a bit of realism to the situation. Up The Gills!!!

Gary, are you saying we are going to win the league and go up as champions. ;) ;)

Seriously, we are only 3 points ahead of last year after 31 games when we finished in 17th place, I think this team are capable of better than that but play-offs are just a dream at the moment.

I think it might have come across that way, ha ha.

I too think they are too far off but, when we were flirting with the drop zone, I felt less points were needed as there are no "whipping boys" adrift on points this season meaning more points are shared amongst the sides. That will still possibly be the case and the same number of points could leave a side 15th or so. With a large gap between the top sides as well this is what is closing the league up and we often see sides on good late runs make the play-offs. Whilst I can't see it and there are at least 7 other sides better than us in this division, we could find ourselves there by accident so to speak. Sides around us are faltering as we improve but it would take a sustained period until the end of the season to do it. Its been ages since we had such a good run so I'm going to enjoy every second!

I love the run we`re on,scoring every game, making Priestfield a fortress, and beating decent Teams. It feels like we`re doing a lot better than 3 points better than last season! If we win at Yeovil I think I will start to believe that the play-off`s are realistic as even though we have beaten tricky Teams who are better than us,we usually mess up against Teams worse than us.If we beat Yeovil then we would be 7th or 8th at the worst.I still keep looking at us needing 54 points for security, but if we win Saturday we have to be in confident mood that we have a chance.

What's so refreshing is that for the first time in years we set up like an attacking side.

Playing to the players strengths. Which begs the question where would have been had we done so much sooner????

Great question Gawawaraara, as in like 1899,1930, 1953, 1974 or maybe 2001?
KFG were going to be 7th or 8th if we win Saturday,( which we will, and the Saturday after as well,) but what happens if the teams that are 7th or 8th win, or are you guaranteeing all the teams above us in the table are going to loose, lol ?
I think we pick up 6 points in the next two weeks, then comes Swindon,Doncaster and bloody Bristol City,( we seem to have played them 86 times this year) hell when does the fixture list get any easier ,lol. ?
We have already got 41 points with what a possible 45 points still on the table, so relegation is out of the question,it would be nice to think we could go into the final two or three games of the season right there in 6th place with a chance of a shout at the playoffs, problem is several of those teams have games in hand ,I think some even two, so fingers crossed and lets start getting the GD back onto the + side.

I dont think we will make the play offs, but then we also have to be realistic. JE is being realistic.

He wouldnt be much of a manager if his team were just 2 pts from the play offs with 16 games to play and not say he hoped we could do it.

Personally the way the league is, I would take another 3 wins to guarantee not getting relegated. After that, just see what happens.

More importantly, its actually good to be a gill's fan again for 5 minutes.

After the drab defensive play under PT, the players out of position, the lack of ideas, this is all refreshing and enjoyable

5 minutes Rob? You're a hard man to please!!! You would have left after 5 minutes Saturday and missed 6 goals ;-)

Doncaster won their game Tonight,so the gap goes from 2 points to 4 points. No one ever expected us to even flirt with the play-offs so just doing so is exciting. The main aim has always been to stay up and we have a comfortable lead at the moment from the bottom. We will see after the next two games if we`re still in a good position to pounce on 6th place.
