Justin Edinburgh says he is looking to sit down with Cody and offer him a new deal shortly.Cody is out of contract in the summer,so it is a no brainer to offer Cody a long term deal. His record so far is impressive with him scoring 60 goals in 132 games.

Lol. I was wrong about Cody. Early in the season he laboured, he never looked like getting a shot on target let alone score a goal, he seemed to seek to draw a foul when through on goal instead of testing the keeper and he was being outscored by defenders. We then got close to Christmas and yet again he sparks into life! He has been great. Many have suggested it Marquis working well as partnership with him but I don't agree. Clearly they do work well but his form rose before he arrived I believe. He has scored enough goals for us for enough seasons to warrant a new deal and we won't find a 15+ scorer anywhere else without coughing up a large sum of money for them!

I would offer Cody McDonald a three year deal, Justin Edinburgh clearly wants Cody McDonald to stay at Gillingham, and Cody McDonald has always signalled his intent on signing a contract extension at Gillingham and I am surprised that it has taken until February before talks about a contract extension have began.
Cody McDonald has already had the big money move in his career when he signed for Coventry City and Coventry always used him as a winger and played Cody McDonald on the right or he would occasionally come on as a sub, at Gillingham Cody McDonald is first on the team sheet and we always sing "Oh Cody McDonald" after he scores, Cody never got that kind of support at Coventry City and it would probably be the same scenario if Cody signed for another football club.

I'm guessing the lateness of discussing a new deal was a ploy by the club. He is the type of player that doesn't stand out a lot nor does he score 25 a season so is rarely on the radar of many other clubs, certainly not for a fee. By no clubs signalling intent to poach him off us we can offer a more realistic deal whereas an extension would either be signed first time by the player without trying to up what is offered or they might hold out for a better deal. By doing it now he would be offered a lesser deal to either accept or hold out meaning he could either end up with no club or having to sign an even worse deal in the summer.
The likes of Dack etc will clearly be attracting attention and offering them better deals earlier to secure their contracts have put the club in the driving seat.

Cody has said a few times in different interviews that he wants to stay here, and would sign a contract straight away.I think Cody would probably prefer a longer deal more than anything as he would be 31 by the time that deal ends.I think we will get it sorted soon.

Cody might say that but I would imagine he would have an agent there who might advise him differently. We have seen it many times where players have been offered a deal and then it goes quiet for weeks in the summer. They either sneak a deal elsewhere or end up signing a last minute deal (not as good as was offered before no doubt) to avoid being out of football altogether. The club won't break the bank to make him stay unless he is Edinburgh's main target and it wouldn't surprise me if this dragged out for a while. I would expect him to sign however and thanks to the "better budgetting" afforded by the Bertrand deal, we can go that extra bit to secure his services, something the agent would hold out for I'm sure!

I certainly hope a deal is done sooner rather than later, it looks as though there are already 4 championship clubs keeping a eye on Marquis after scoring 5 goals in 7 games.

The reason there looking at The Marquis of Gillingham is because of Peter Taylor, he does wonderful things for the guys we bring in from other clubs, nothing for our guys, but for other teams and players here on loan the guys brill, brill I say. Gone, what do you mean gone, gone where??

Surely before the end of the Month? Cody could be on 20 goals by the end of the Month!
