Can somebody explain this business about if Millwall offer Marquis a deal then we have to pay compensation???? Everyone is talking about it saying it doesn't mean he unlikely to sign for us more a case that it ensures they would get a fee if they offer him a deal no worse than the one that just expired?
I thought, under the Bosman ruling, a player could move away for free once his contract ended unless they were youth players? If a player was on an expensive deal and the club didn't want him to leave they can offer him the same deal and he would be unlikely to go anywhere. It would make it difficult for him to reject that deal in favour for another elsewhere! I'm pretty sure we offered new deals to Bayo and others last summer and they turned them down so I presume we got compensation for both of them then!!!! Don't get it.

It's to do with players age! If they are under 24 and offered new deal then compensation has to be paid! Normally a nominal fee as with Brennan Dickenson and Luke Norris

Ahhh, I didn't realise he was that young! So age doesn't automatically come into it? If a young player isn't offered a new deal they can still sign elsewhere for free????

I wish John Marquis all the best for the future at Millwall, and you cannot be angry or begrudge the young man for deciding on doing what is best for his football career, the lure of Millwall and playing under Neil Harris was too much for John Marquis to turn down.
I also think there is every possibility that John Marquis priced himself out of a permanent move to Gillingham, because I am sure that there were several clubs in League One who were interested in signing the young striker, and the wages that were being offered to John Marquis, were going to be wages that Gillingham just cannot compete with, as we simply do not have those finances and resources, but John Marquis cannot be on big money and being a squad player who plays now and then, he needs to be playing first team football on a regular basis, that is what hurts the most about this, because John Marquis would of been playing competitive first team football, week in, week out for Gillingham Football Club.
At least this John Marquis saga didn't drag on for the next seven week's and then we find out in mid-July that John Marquis signed for Millwall, we can now turn our attention's to other transfer targets and I personally think that we need a centre forward who can play alongside Cody McDonald, two strikers would be ideal, but I think that we need to spread our resources around the entire first team squad, and especially in defence, as that is the area of the squad that needs strengthening the most.
Had Neil Harris not been appointed as Millwall Manager, I think John Marquis would of signed for Gillingham.

Gutted to see this, this afternoon.I think the lure of playing under a good mate in Neil Harris, and more than like more money makes Millwall a more attractive proposition.I wish John all the best, and thought it was a nice touch of him to thanks the fans on his Twitter.

Paul Scally says there are plenty of other Strikers available after we missed out on John Marquis. He says the package offered by Millwall was a really good one.

John Marquis wouldn't have priced himself out of a move to Gillingham! Millwall had the option on Marquis which they have exercised! John Marquis or Gillingham had no say in the matter!
