Gillingham's remaining home matches in The League

Postby fan_of_mulligan » Sat Jan 17, 2015 6:45 pm

Coventry City
Oldham Athletic
Sheffield United
MK Dons
Barnsley
Doncaster Rovers
Colchester United
Fleetwood Town
Bradford City
Rochdale
Notts County

And our form at Priestfield Stadium is probably going to be the deciding factor on whether Gillingham are going to be playing in League One or League Two Next Season and I think Gillingham need nine wins (or any variation of picking up 27 points from our remaining 21 league games to ensure that Gillingham will be in League One Next Season), back to back league wins against Coventry City and Oldham Athletic would be a good start because the more points Gillingham can get on the board now, the less we will need later on, I don't want Gillingham to be in a situation where we need to win two of our remaining three league games to avoid relegation.

The last two results against Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale really did hurt though, because Gillingham are going to need wins against Sheffield United and MK Dons to make up for the points we have lost in those six pointer matches.

I know it is still too early to be talking about relegation six pointers or the amount of points we need to stay up, but our form at Priestfield Stadium will ultimately decide on division Gillingham will be playing in next season.

Firstly I don't agree GFC will not need nine wins (27 points) to stay in the First Division, we have 28 points from 26 games and I think 48 points will keep us up, 50 defiantly will ,that's 20 points from 20 games, and yes I think we will be fighting till the last few games, unless a new manager comes in and turns this thing around in a couple of games ,but we will be OK.
Although todays 3-1 win over Coventry was great, both the reports I have read say we were second best and Coventry should consider themselves unlucky not to have at least shared the points, I was not there so can not comment.
February scares me , I hope I am wrong,we need to pick up 9 against Oldham, Yeovil and Barnsley, and hope we find Sheff U, or MKD having an off day, maybe picking up a point going to P'trborgh we will then be left with 38 points on the board needing 10 possible 12 from the remaining 13 or so games which should be obtainable,he says unable to use the key board because all his fingers are crossed, hahaha.
To early to panic yet my dear Miss Fanny Mulligan, start getting concerned that first week in March if were still in the red zone.

The reports you read were probably written by people who weren't there again, Chicago. The only real shot Coventry had was the penalty. The match stats show we had 19 attempts to their 5. Gills 7 corners to Coventry's 3.
Now, they were unfortunate because our penalty was never really a penalty - the fact that the Rainham end were singing " We love you Lino" bears that out. However, I thought the one awarded against us was dubious as well.
Don't know how the rest of the season will pan out, but yesterday was a deserved victory.

I agree FOM,we have a couple of away wins which always helps, but our home form will now play a big part in whether we will stay up or not.If we can make Priestfield a fortress then we will be fine.

That's great then, I am glad we were deserved winners , the reports I read basically said Coventry were unlucky not to have added to their lead in the second half, and one said Gillingham kicked (fouled)there way to a win,but who cares ,three points is three points and that's the good bit of the story.

For large parts both sides conspired to constantly give the ball away. It wasn't a great game and we missed two seemingly hard to miss open goals, Hessy hit the bar with a superb back to goal overhead kick and we were losing 1-0 thanks to a very dubious penalty. So as far as I was concerned it looked a bad day at the office. We were a side on the rocks, no direction and a week of controversy and embarrassment and yet somehow we pulled 3 unlikely goals out of the hat. With those other chances we could easily have won 6-1 and sounded like being in full control even though we weren't. Luck has been firmly against us but often evens itself over the course of the season and now perhaps ours is in again. We need to make the most of the opportunity presented!

I thought we were easily deserved winners, it was by far one of the best performances in a long time, even during our championship season it was rare to see us dominate a game.
The one thing I'm worried about (probably the only person who is) will the new manager be a good thing, I know this is the first win under the gang of 4 but the football has been very entertaining for a change. Port Vale we deserved something from the game, Crewe had more to do with a biased ref than anything, Bristol were just a different class.

I agree with a lot of that, I felt it was improving under Taylor as well. Whilst we were improved compared with recent home games I do feel the last 10 minutes kind of wiped the slate clean of the game as we had played better football and lost earlier in the season. Still a good game but it looked destined to be one of those "played well yet failed to score" matches. Thankfully the 3 goals in 8 / 12 minutes made it seem the best!

At this stage it's just results that matter, how we get them is almost immaterial . Survival is our only ambition for this year unless you include a resignation from Scally and there's more chance of the Pope getting married than that.

A win against Oldham Athletic on Saturday would greatly increase our chances of survival and Gillingham need to win as many matches as they can at Priestfield Stadium.

Eight wins (24 points) will keep us up because Gillingham's Goal Difference is a lot better then the bottom four, but I want us to go into The Notts County Game knowing that we're not playing for League One Survival on the final day of the season.

Who would of thought that Gillingham would of picked up nine points out of nine from these three home matches (because I certainly didn't), and these home wins although with a draw away from home against Walsall have seen Gillingham pull seven points clear of the relegation zone and we have given ourselves some breathing space with some matches coming up against Peterborough United and MK Dons, but at least we go into these matches off the back of a morale and confidence boosting win against Sheffield United today.

Gillingham need to pick up a few wins away from home to make 100% sure that we're safe from relegation, but if we can win at home and draw away from home then we will be fine this season, Yeovil Town and Crawley Town away are games I think Gillingham need to target to win and put a bigger points buffer between ourselves and the teams in and around us in the table.
