Up next for the Gills

When we faced a very tricky tie at Sheffield Utd they were top of the league with 10 wins in 11 home games and had conceded 4 goals. We then travelled to Bradford who hadn't lost at home for 22 league games and had conceded just 11 goals in them yet both games saw us score twice and prevent them from taking all 3 points. The two games have been very encouraging and I don't think we deserved to take only the draw against Shrewsbury. There are some big games ahead, 4 out of the next 5 all at home, that will define where we are heading under Pennock:

Port Vale (H) - 1 win in 11 in the league and just 1 win away all season. 5 of their last 7 on the road in the league have ended in defeat (the other 2 were drawn).
Chesterfield (H) - Just 1 goal scored in 7 league games and just 1 win away all season. 9 of their last 10 on the road in the league have ended in defeat (the other was a win).
Coventry (A) - No goals scored in any of their last 4 games in the league. 11 of their last 13 in the league have ended in defeat (the other 2 were drawn).
AFC Wimbledon (H) - 3 wins in 13 in the league but none in 7 away from home. They failed to score in any of those last 7 away games in the league.
Southend (H) - Unbeaten in 7 away and with only 1 defeat in 17 in the league.
Swindon (A) - 1 win in 10 in the league.
Bury (A) - 1 win in 20 in the league with 7 defeats from their last 9 home league games.

After that......4 very difficult fixtures on paper (Scunthorpe, Bolton and Peterborough at home, Rochdale away)! We need to buck the trend we normally follow and win the "easy" games and carry some form into the "hard" ones!

February is a busy month,so these are my predictions for the month.

Sat 4th Bradford ( A) 2-2
Sat 11th Port Vale (H)
Tues 14th Chesterfield (H)
Sat 18th Coventry (A)
Tues 21st AFC Wimbledon (H)
Sat 25th Southend (H)
Tues 28th Swindon (A)

7 games this month, with 4 at home. Most of the games are against Teams around us in the table.A good set of results would put us in the mid 40`s and closer to safety.Bradford was a very good point, and I think Port Vale at home is a great opportunity to beat a side that is not doing well and not great away.Chesterfield a few days later are in the bottom 4,and it is another chance to get maximum points and push ourselves up the table.Coventry are in a terrible position on and off the field,so if we play our game we can be looking at getting a result there.Wimbledon is always a tough game, and they tend to leave Priestfield with something.Southend have been on a great run for a while now,mad to think we have beaten them twice well on their own patch. They sit in the top 6 as things stand.I have a feeling they may nick this game.Swindon away to finish the month will be tough, but in recent games we have done well down there.

I have gone for 12 points that puts us on 44 points to finish February.I hope I am right!

Three points against a bad away team in Port Vale , three the following game against Chesterfield who are an even worse away team, then Coventry , I see a draw and a point but really we should be looking at 3 so fingers crossed on that one, the same for the games against the Wombles I think one point ,nothing against Sarfend and then a point from the Swindon game ,a total of between 9 and 11 points from a possible 18 .
It could be a long season with us sitting in the 14th,15th, 16th, place in the table for much of what remains of it.

How many points do we think we need to be free from the fear of relegation? Will fifty do this year?

No Team has gone down on 52,so that would be my target!

We have dug ourselves into a hole, six points from the next two games could still find us in about the same position as we are today, that Wombles game could prove to be a biggy . I think we will be OK, I can see us ending up with about 50 points which still leaves us in the "danger zone ",but who knows, we might get hot and go on a run in the next few weeks, after all three home and one away against the worst teams in the division, you have to like our chances of pulling off 12 points from those don't you ??
