Crawley (A)

Another tough game for us,Crawley had a great result at peterborough and will have the confidence from that. This will be my first trip to Crawley,so hopefully we can sneak our first win of the season, and our first away win in League One since around 2008.

It should be a good day out for a big a gills following regardless of the result. I am hoping against all the evidence to the contrary that we can spring a surprise. Keds to score from the spot will do for me. The defence however must do better and stop gifting sloppy goals if we are to have any chance of escaping with all three points.

Welcome to the board Wainscotty. I echo your post. We will win soon so sneaking one today is as likely as anything else I guess!

I thought we were poor in defence, and lacked quality in midfield. How we got to H/T at 0-0 I don`t know.Crawley had alot of joy down the wings and Adams and Clarke inparticular found it too easy to beat their man.Our best chance of the first half was when Whelpdale blazed over. The second half was mad and we did start better and won a penalty early on after Kedwell was fouled in the box.Kedwell stepped up and blazed it in the top corner. Not long after Alexander appeared to stand on Legge which got him a second yellow and he was off.The one man advantage did not last long as Lee got his second yellow card and he was off.Crawley won a freekick on the left hand side and scored from it,Crawley then went back on top and got another goal which was frustrating. To our credit we kept at it and Dack won the ball back and put a good cross in,it found Legge who toe poked it home.Unfortunatly Legge hurt is back from scoring and had to be replaced.Again though with us looking poor in defence Crawley got the winner when our defence stepped back and allowed Clarke to belt the ball into the top corner. We did come close to equalising when their player headed onto his own post, but that was it and Crawley comfortably held on for the 6 minutes of injury time.

I enjoyed my trip to Crawley, but was concerned how poor we were defensively, and that we hoofed it too much.We looked a lot better side when we passed it around. The tough games keep on coming with high scoring Coventry up next.We do need more quality in midfield, and perhaps a pacy CB to challenge Barrett and Legge.

The ref and linesman were poor, but they all seem to be in the lower leagues.

Thanks for the report, must have been a fairly exciting game, anything with 5 goals in it is my kind of game, just wish we had scored 3. Gate of only 3800 there, makes our 6000 look good.
Most embarrassing thing is that by this time next week Coventry may well have overtaken us, rooting us firmly in the relegation zone, and having to sub the big guy in the 30th minute I guess does not bode well for his future at GFC ?
Looking at the next games, Coventry at N'thmpton in front of another 3000 + gate, followed by Bradford City , trip to Crewe where we might get a point, hell it could be mid October when we go to Notts C before we "sneak" our first win. Noircat can I change my predictions now please ?
Somehow don't think sneaking a win here and a win there is going to cut it, all a bit sad really, after last year being so good I thought we would be a mid table team, maybe even sniffing a top ten finish, at the moment I am leaning towards thinking avoiding relegation will make this year a success.
Anyway we have only one way to go and that's up, rite, lol, perhaps Coventry will underestimate us and we will start the ball rolling with a win ?

He will need to! Coventry just cannot stop scoring at the moment and Sunday's game could see the loser go bottom of the league! Mind you, Peterborough also couldn't stop scoring until Crawley beat them 2-0 at theirs so hopefully a lot of Gills fans and a dire atmosphere might help us do the same!
