Players Released, what are your thoughts?

Weston and Lee possibly not a surprise, I guess wages from potential new deals may have played a part in their departure (they could simply have been told they are no longer required though) but that then suggests Whelpdale has been offered a new deal and so too has Akinfenwa. Gregory is a big surprise as I thought he was quite different from many of the other midfielders we had. Borrowdale we were told was probably not going to be ready much before then end of the season so why bother at all unless his injury worsened.

As for the two keepers, both came with promise for the future and yet both have left. Good job Nelson signed a new deal then.

There will always be a couple of players open for discussion.

I wouldnt have offered new deals to whelpdale and akinfenwa, unless they are greatly reduced deals. 2 of our top earners and not 2 of our top performers. If your gonna take the wage, earn the money.

Lots of players have been released this year. What we need to be is be busy and be busy now. Walsall have released their top scorer, posh have released several players who all played a lot last year, we need to be
active now rather than fishing in the pond of left overs like we normally do.

That said, we do seem to have acted quite fast so far which is good news.

Whelpdale being offered a new deal a little odd. Rob's quite right in saying he is one of the biggest earners but he hasn't really lived up to his earlier promise of a couple of seasons ago. Reports suggest he is keen on a move to Stevenage so why offer a new deal?? Akinfenwa I think is still useful player to bring on but I personally feel Gregory and Lee gave a lot to the cause but perhaps rejected a new deal if the pay wasn't what they wanted.

It sounds like Peter Taylor wanted to know his future so that he could crack on with the task at hand. Great news if we start signing players. Under the past few managers we seemed happy to pick up players late, even last season we signed after the season began. Quite why I don't know but this is the managers domain to sort the side and many have been a bit reluctant of late. Let's hope we get the players in soon. Very exciting.

He was blank on my list and I thought he was out of contract as well but I am told he is here for another year.

I`m surprised Gregory has been released as he played a lot of games this season,and we did tend to play better when he played.I am surprised that Whelpdale has been offered a new deal,seeing as he has not been very good in League one this season,and was injured quite a bit.I thought Lee would have been more likely than Whelpdale to get a new deal as he can play in a few different positions,and looked ok near the end of the season.I was expecting Taylor to give Weston another year deal,but it looks like Taylor is now looking for a better winger which is good.Fagan is no surprise as he didn`t really set our Team alight,and we will look for better.Birchall was the most likely to leave as has never looked the same since his bad injury.Howard,and Baxter were never going to challenge Nelson,and I expect an experienced Keeper to take the subs bench.Borrowdale did seem a pointless signing as he was never likely to play a game,but atleast we were not paying him any wages.Carter was always injured and never looked like challenging the Squad,and Muggleton was always likely to go once his dad left.Butcher we knew was not getting a new deal back in April,but I thought we might have kept him for another year as he didn`t look too bad against Colchester.
