Goals from Midfield

Postby fan_of_mulligan » Thu Nov 13, 2014 5:25 pm

If Tuesday Night's 2 - 1 win against Crawley Town is to highlight one thing in particular, then it has to be the lack of goals we are seeing from midfield this season, below are Gillingham's Goal-Scorers from Midfield..........

Bradley Dack 2
Brennan Dickenson 2
Doug Loft 1
Jermaine McGlashan 1
Aaron Morris 1

If Danny Kedwell and Cody McDonald are not going to score enough goals between them to keep Gillingham in League One, then we either need to sign another striker capable of scoring ten goals a season, or the midfield starts to take the responsibility off our main two strikers by chipping in with a few goals themselves, over half of the goals from midfield this season have come in The Football League Trophy where as goals in the league have been harder to come by.

With the signings of Jermaine McGlashan, Doug Loft, Aaron Morris, Josh Pritchard and Brennan Dickenson, and considering that Jake Hessenthaler and Bradley Dack have both signed long term contract extensions with the club, Gillingham have spent the most amount of there money strengthening the midfield and it is the midfield that needs to start chipping in with a few more goals.

What does everyone else on here think ???

I think its the changes that are doing it. One minute there are 3 then 5 and if we play the same system 2 players will be dropped for somebody else. Kedwell has the best return scoring from every 2.4 games, Cody scores every 3.4 games. The best midfielder is Dack scoring every 9.0 games. Cody was the best last season with one every 2.8 games whilst Dack had one every 6.4 games.

It's all very well resting players but it unsettles the side and I think that's the problem, the figures suggest the rates are decreasing because they are in and out all the time.

The whole dam team has only scored 14 goals in 16 games, and if we don't bring in a couple of goal scorers in the New Year, THEN I THINK WERE UP THE PROVERBIAL CREEK with out an outboard motor. Trouble is every other team in every division is going to be looking for the same thing. I hope Scally is working real hard to bring a couple of guys in on loan from Championship clubs.

I made much the same point in an earlier post; I think it explains why the Taylor 'tactics' just don't work for us. Interestingly ( yes I know they are only stats) the win at Crawley was the only one of GFC's last ten or a dozen games where we actually had more possession than the oppo - and with only 10 men.
It does suggest that the 'contain the oppo and score on the break' approach is completely inappropriate for this squad.

If we can't change the players or the manager at least try something different !!!!

I totally agree Rimshot. Only 3 games all season saw us have most of the ball and a further 3 were deemed 50-50. We scored 8 goals in the first 4 games with an average of 44.25% so we don't need more possession but we were more free flowing and attack minded. We went for the contain method at the end of the promotion season and almost blew it. We generally have players that can score goals but are liable to concede as well and perhaps we should have just gone with that - possibly too late now the momentum would have gone. Sides like Walsall and Oldham tend to be good at not conceding but don't score a lot either. At least when we are attacking we are asking questions of the other side who are not attacking our goal either.
