“He is a goalkeeper, he has to make saves,” said Edinburgh. “I have no problem with him. I told him I can’t guarantee him the number one spot and he wants to be no.1.
“We have discussed it and feel his future may be away from the club, but I never close the door on anyone, you can see that.
Ok, that's sort of fair enough but it's not leaving the player or us many options! The final part of that statement then contradicts what is said earlier in the interview about Josh Pritchard:
“I have made it clear that Josh’s future lies away from the football club,” said the Gills boss.
“Josh is not going to be involved in the travelling party and I felt it would be good if he could try and this week secure his future away from the football club.”
Doesn't sound like not closing the door on him! Now I know Pritchard wants away as he is homesick and Nelson wanted a guarantee of first team football but it kind of sounds like the mind is made up which, particularly in Nelson's case, is strange at this stage of the season having proved himself so often? Maybe its more about geeing him up a bit to fight for his place as I wouldn't assume Glenn Morris would be his natural successor. As for Pritchard I am presuming that is more a case of saying if he is homesick then find a club or stay and play as he can't simply sit at home and get paid. He wasn't one of the 20 players used Saturday and now he hasn't gone on the tour either. If he's not careful we are going to have a player that won't be much use next season and after showing so much promise. I hope these are isolated incidents with players who want better and not some more morale issues or manager who has no interest in seeing what a certain player can do.
